Calef Brown

Calef Brown is an illustrator, author, and educator with a career spanning over three decades. He studied illustration at Art Center College of Design and made his publishing debut in SPIN magazine in 1989. His work has since appeared in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Time, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, and more.

Beyond editorial illustration, he has created murals, book covers, and advertising for clients such as Adidas, Coca-Cola, Levi’s, Target, Sony Music, and Nickelodeon. Since 1998, he has written and illustrated thirteen children’s books, including Flamingos on the Roof (a New York Times bestseller) and Hypnotize a Tiger, which won multiple poetry awards.

Brown has also illustrated works by Daniel Pinkwater, Edward Lear, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. He is an associate professor of Illustration at RISD, previously teaching at Otis, Art Center, and Emily Carr University.
